Fashion, Algorithms & Digital Literacy with Chinouk Filique de Miranda - E7

Host Beata Wilczek calls on leading minds, from researchers and technologists to designers, artists and activists, to look at the emerging fashion futures and digital cultures in changing times.

Algorithms are a part of our everyday lives. On social media, they not only suggest or dictate what we see but also create a portrait of who we are. This portrait is reflected in the content and ads we encounter. Have you ever been persistently recommended a new fashion brand, a multifunctional tool, or perhaps an exciting travel destination, like Madeira, for your next holiday? It's about time we reflect on the algorithmic gaze, how it is linked to fashion, and the importance of digital literacy.

Chinouk Filique de Miranda is a Rotterdam-based design researcher and critical (fashion) practitioner. Her work is situated in between the fashion system and digital culture, as she analyzes, translates and visualizes how they intersect. Chinouk has collaborated with such institutions as Warehouse, Cooper Hewitt, National Museum of African American History and Culture.

"Fashion has willingly and unwillingly become inextricably linked with digital culture because both are part of our everyday lives, both are a source of communication and both help us assert ourselves and our imagined identities and public spaces."

- Chinouk Filique de Miranda

In 2019 Chinouk graduated from ArtEZ University of the Arts where she developed her ongoing research project titled Algorithmic Gaze. I hope that today we will make sure that everyone knows what the algorithmic gaze is, how it is connected to fashion. I also hope that we will touch upon digital literacy and our awareness - of one's agency in the fashion digital ecosystem.

"I consider digital literacy as the main tool for a digital agency. Everything we
see has become clickable. Through this construct of efficiency, we experienced 1:1 engagement with fashion. It's presented to us as a highly personalized act of service.

I think our digital dimension needs us to actively interpret and deconstruct
our online environment and it's an all- consuming mesh of interconnected networks."
