Once you place the human body at the center of innovation and technology, the potential for advancements in how we live and interact with our environment becomes vast. Designer Scarlet Yang is at the forefront of integrating biomaterials with emerging technologies in fashion. Known for its applications in gaming, digital skin has become a focal point in her projects, bridging the gap between interactive technology and wearable art. By incorporating this tech into her designs, Yang is setting a new realm for how fashion responds to the environment and the individual.
Scarlett Yang is a London-based Innovation Designer and Founder of Studio Scarlett Yang. The studio pioneers in sustainable design, ecological and virtual materials, and collaborates with leading brands and museums around the world, while holding its commitment to bolstering the future of technology.
"One of my recent works "Ephemeral Materiality" is an immersive interactive installation piece. It incorporates sensors and algorithm programming behind
a screen, which displays visual and audio content. The installation interprets satellite-based climate data, as well as data from new materials or laboratory experiments. By merging these two sets of data, it creates a mesmerizing experience of morphing textures on the screen.
The installation responds in real-time to the presence and movements of individuals who enter the space. This dynamic interaction allows for a truly engaging experience."- Scarlett Yang
Scarlett has a hybrid background in: couture from Central Saint Martins, design research from Royal College of Art and science engineering from Imperial College London. Her multidisciplinary work has been exhibited internationally, at Christie’s, Rolls Royce’s Muse Art Programme, the V&A Museum, London Design Biennale, Dutch Design Week and more.
"There is often a promise of a green transition through digital means, aiming to make the world more "environmentally friendly." Similarly, when we envision future scenarios with virtual bodies, they often seem disconnected from the pressing issues of the climate crisis. In gaming, Earth may serve as a backdrop or part of the storytelling.
We need to understand that this divide is merely an illusion. These aspects
coexist simultaneously. The increasing presence of technology in our daily lives and the proliferation of virtual products will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the environment."- Beata Wilczek
