Even though digital fashion may seem like a novel concept, designers have been delving into this area for some time. Generative fashion is the practice of using algorithmic and computational methods to create clothing designs. This technique enables the creation of distinctive and evolving patterns that are challenging or even impossible to produce manually. As this approach gains traction, it also prompts discussions on energy consumption and environmental sustainability. The computation required for generative fashion demands a considerable amount of power, and when NFTs and blockchain technology enter the equation, the energy stakes are raised, making it an essential topic for industry consideration.
Elizabeth Bigger is a fashion and technology practitioner focusing on climate impact, arts, and pioneering technologies. Fusing data within design processes she builds analytics and design systems for the inclusion of climate impact data within computational fashion design.
"Being a computational fashion designer means I use computation in two ways:
In the design of the pattern layouts, the details and physical attributes of the piece.
I use computational elements as hardware and electronics, within the garment."
- Elizabeth Bigger

Elizabeth has spent a decade investigating and implementing advanced computational tools in digital fashion design, fabrication, and production. She is a co-founder and co-director of Datable Studio, which has developed CAD fashion analytics systems, 3D body databases, wearable computing projects, the Augmented Senses Studio, and several interactive art installations.
Her work has been exhibited at fine art & design museums, international art festivals, and conferences. Elizabeth has been awarded the Design Jury Prize three times for her work at the International Symposium on Wearable Computers.
"Blockchain is great for transparency, but it depends on what you want it to show. I would like to see the hands that are responsible for making fashion get paid.
Is it possible that there is a decentralized fashion system that can go from global design to local production in a reasonable way?"
